{"id":9,"date":"2007-03-31T19:51:11","date_gmt":"2007-03-31T18:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.amikkelsen.com\/?p=9"},"modified":"2007-03-31T19:51:11","modified_gmt":"2007-03-31T18:51:11","slug":"error-migrating-a-vm-from-esx-254-to-esx-3x","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amikkelsen.com\/?p=9","title":{"rendered":"Error migrating a VM from ESX 2.5.4 to ESX 3.X"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'\">During an upgrade of an ESX 2.5.4 environment to ESX 3.0.1 I had a problem with one of the VM&#8217;s.<br \/>\nEvery time I tried to clone or migrate\u00c2\u00a0a specific\u00c2\u00a0VM I got the same error over and over.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'\">&#8220;Host does not support the virtual hardware version of the virtual machine&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'\">I realized that the VM originally was build on a GSX server.<br \/>\nI opened the vmx file and saw that the hardware versions were not updated properly.<br \/>\nThe 2 hardware parameters in the vmx file is\u00c2\u00a0config.version = &#8220;x&#8221; and virtualHW.version =\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;x&#8221;. Where x is a number based on the host OS.<br \/>\nFor a GSX these numbers are 6 and 2.<br \/>\nFor an ESX 2.5.x these numbers are 6 and 3.<br \/>\nThis meant that when the VM was moved from GSX to ESX 2.5.x the virtual hardware wasn&#8217;t upgraded properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 15.6pt\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Georgia','serif'\">The resolution was to completely uninstall the VMware Tools in the VM and make a complete reinstallation of the VMware Tools. Here after it is possible to upgrade the Virtual Hardware.<br \/>\nNow the migration of the VM to an ESX 3.0.1 host will run smoothly.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During an upgrade of an ESX 2.5.4 environment to ESX 3.0.1 I had a problem with one of the VM&#8217;s.
