Duncan over at YelloBricks.com posted a nice easy howto on renaming a VM from within VC and from the service console.<\/p>\n

There are a couple of ways to rename a Virtual Machine, but there are two in my opinion that stand out:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Shutdown the VM<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Rename the VM in VirtualCenter<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Migrate the VM and move it to another Datastore<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. done!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    And from the service console:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. vmware-cmd -s unregister \/vmfs\/volumes\/datastore\/vm\/vmold.vmx<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. mv \/vmfs\/volumes\/datastore\/vm-old \/vmfs\/volumes\/datastore\/vm-new<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. cd \/vmfs\/volumes\/datastore\/vm-new<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. vmkfstools -E vm-old.vmdk vm-new.vmdk<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. find . -name \u00e2\u20ac\u02dc*.vmx*\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 -print -exec sed -e \u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\/vm-old\/vm-new\/g\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 {} \\;<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. mv vm-old.vmx vm-new.vmx
      \nfor every file that hasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t been renamed (.vmsd etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. vmware-cmd -s register \/vmfs\/volumes\/datastore\/vm-new\/vm-new.vmx<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
